The rheology of crystal-bearing magmas: An experimental approach Supervisors: Prof. Yan Lavallée, Dr. Silvio De Angelis and Dr. Jackie Kendrick Funding: European Research Council Project: Strain Localisation in Magma (SLiM)
The strength and viscosity as a function of porosity and crystal content have been characterised from both natural rock from Mt Unzen (Japan) and unique two-phase crystal and glass samples. Synthetic samples have been thermally analysed and reconstructed using computed X-ray tomography. Recent work has been carried out at Diamond light source synchrotron to perform cutting edge in-situ deformation “4D” experiments on these high-temperature synthetic magmas during deformation.
Fieldwork in Japan 2016
This is our most recent trip to Japan where we studied Mount Unzen. Check out my blog post to learn more.
Fieldwork in Mexico with Anthony Lamur 2015
Anthony Lamur, Yan Lavallée and I visited Ceboruco volcano in Mexico in March 2015. Most of these amazing pictures were taken by Anthony.
